AX11 (without MIKUNOPOLIS) (Eng.)


"MIKUNOPOLIS" was a part of "ANIME EXPO 2011". First I reported the nitty-gritty of the whole event. Secondary I'm going to report about the main exhivition.

So, again, I'll report it in my English that is under development... (re, really...?)

"ANIME EXPO 2011" was held from Jul.1 ~ Jul.4, at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC), Los Angeles, California, US. That is the largest animation festival in the North America.


I got the LACC at around 3pm, July 1. However, I've only bought 1 day ticket for Jul.2... It means that I can't enter the inside on that day.

I could enter the lobby without ticket. And there were...


















There were "Itasha" Toyota Corolla!
(A car that body is decorated by illustration of animation/video game character. You know that Miku is not an animation character though.)
We could get a poster when we answered a sheet of simple survey about car.

The next day, they were giving another poster. And more, the other group were distributing different poster in front of NOKIA theater. Totally I got 3 different posters.
However, I couldn't get the fourth design that was released Jul.3, my leaving day. Moreover, I couldn't grab a (kind of) cushion designed Miku at the NOKIA theater. These are strongly regrettable point of this journey.


Later, I bought a 2-feet-long drain pipe at the DIY store. It helped to bring these posters to Japan in perfect condition!






Stick to the main hall. I went to the reception and asked "I have a pre-registration for tomorrow. Can I exchange my real(?) ticket now?". The answer was "Yes, you can.". I will save some time tomorrow...

Anyway, my ticket was only for tomorrow. Can't wait!

...July 2 is coming!
I arrived at the LACC at 8:30 because I'd misunderstood it opens 9am. However, the hall opened at 10am. I had to stay in a line to wait for the opening of the door.
At five to ten, the line advanced inside of the hall. Unlike Japanese similar festival, there were no clapping hands.

I went to the already crowded "MIKUNOPOLIS" booth first, bought the official brochures and coasters. I also stood in a line to buy Nendoroid... but I got out from the line several minutes later. Because, I thought that just making line is waste of my time (aroumd 1 hour). And I also thought that the Nendoroid should be bought by the American. It's a kind of charity for the East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami victims.

I chose walking the whole area of the hall. As I see it, it's not as large as the West hall of Tokyo Big Site. But, the width of corridors and the size of each booths were enough for many visitors. Also, there were many tables and chairs to take rest. It was possible to have a light meal from a booth.


Most booths were by the companies. Some Japanese companies also displayed their products.

...By the way, "YAOI"...






The innermost area was "Artist Alley". It was a doujin... amateur illustrator's booths. The number of booths were not as many as Japanese event such as "Comic Market", but the quality of their illustration were quite high! I couldn't find any "Thin Book" as a derivative works that is very common in Japanese events. Mainly, posters, postcards and badges were sold. Some group were selling big tapestries.


I bought these illustrations. It costed around $10 each. Personally I think these were expensive although I don't know much about the average price of Doujin in Japan.
There are many print shop among Japan because Japanese loves books, magazines and fliers... so, it is very easy to publish anything in Japan. American situation must be very different.



I'm not sure that American point of view for copyright and derivative works influences Doujin or not. Also, I can't speculate that whether many American illustrators are not aiming for their original (includes derivative) scenarios. The price might reflects that American doujin is not matured yet. Although their works are rising remarkably high level, American doujin world is still under construction, I think.

On the other hands, Japanese prices are rather cheap than American are expensive. A day in this travel, I paid $30 for my dinner at a casual restaurant. (I ordered a mug of beer, salad and pasta (including tax and tip)). Certainly, the pasta was delicious and it had many large scallops and shrimps. However I was confused the price actually. If I ordered soup and dessert, it would cost up to $50.
When I set this price as a kind of guideline of all prices in the States, paying $10 for each illustration may be reasonable...


Back to the main hall.
There were many cosplayers. And they were real.













When I asked "Would you mind taking your picture?", many cosplayer showes a little shy smile. But the next moment, they answered "Not at all!" and posed for my photo.
(To tell the truth, the shy smile must be the prettiest face for them, I believe! But you know, only photographers can know the smile...)






These costume can be bought from web shop even in the States, and of course it's possible to import them from Japan personally. However, the cosplayer should think about the size of the costume. These for Japanese women must be to small for westerners.

Then, I suppose many cosplayers sew their own costume by theirselves. Fortunately or unfortunately, there was Hollywood, as the home of entertainment. People seeks reality and accuracy.






She could become Rin Kagamine with her natural hair. That must be a kind of advantage.















Some cosplayers are dressed in special costume about particular song such as "Matryoshka" and "magnet".





Of course, there are many many cosplayers without VOCALOIDs.

























And they leave the hall with their costume. I found GUMI was walking downtown near the next station of the LACC.







After the lunch near the Nokia theater, I went to the West building of LACC to listen to a conference. There were Mr.Sasaki (Crypton Future Media Inc.) and Mr. Onyx Kobahashi (the vocaloid producer who composed "Saihate").

That conference was also aimed a sort of marketing in the North America by Crypton Inc. Hatsune Miku English edition is going to be developed. However, unlike Luka, English Miku may speak and sing "Engrish" =Japanese-like English because Ms. Fujita Saki, as "the person inside of Miku" (Ms. Fujita gave Miku the voice.) can't speak English well, according to the conference.

During the conference, Mr. Sasaki said that "I suppose, the song by the prototype of English Miku might be listened near here, tonight... ". The large conference room was filled by shouts of joy! You should know what it means... yes, of course!

Mr. Sasaki asked many questions to the audience. Do everybody choose and listen to VOCALOID songs by the name of producer, Where do you find new VOCALOID songs...
The supplier's point of view, they are very important question whether English Miku will succeed or not. It is, so to speak, the possibility of the advent of English-speaking producers from the US, currently only as a consumer.

Mr. Onyx Kobayashi also emphasized that "I want to listen to music that was produced by the American sense of music." Definitely, I think so, too. In near future, when many nice songs get across the Pacific Ocean West bound, that must cause the improvement of skills and senses together. Also, that improvement will bring international collaboration, a song by American and an illustration by Japanese... for instance. The Web make us realize international exchange quite easily!

Personally, for the future of VOCALOID, it must be very important test whether Miku is sold well in the US or not, equally means whether many American producers appears or not.

However, double check the current situation.
Actually, although there are many English VOCALOIDs, I've never heard that these VOCALOIDs are popular and common among the World. That's regrettable. You know that Luka can sing Japanese and English songs now. Also, there are other English VOCALOIDs such as SweetAnn and BigAl who has VOCALOID2 engine. But still, why American prefer Miku? Is the US still sticking to the character? You never forget that she and her mates sing YOUR SONG on your desktop!!

I sincerely expect that how many American change their class from consumer to producer because of their strong desire, "I want Miku to sing my song!".

MIKUNOPOLIS (Eng.)



Even my English is still poor, I'll report my great experience...

I joined "MIKUNOPOLIS(*1)" that was held on July 2nd, in Los Angeles, CA.


At 7 O'clock PM. There were many audience in front of NOKIA theater waiting for the open.

Ticket had already sold out. Certainly, the ticket fee($15) was quite cheap... but, this event is a part of "ANIME EXPO 2011(*2)". Audience has to pay extra $50/day as an entrance fee for the main hall.

There was Toyota Carolla with illustration of Miku. I was not sure that whether Miku advertises Toyota Carolla or Toyota advertises Miku. (*3)

...It was just the time to enter.
Great shouts of joy suddenly broke out! Lines are made by audience automatically...


Passing through a metal detector, I showed my ticket to the clerk. "Go upstairs." On the 2nd floor, "Go upstairs." My seat was on the 3rd floor...
(Those seats are reserved in order of check-in. I was too late to check-in because I just joined ANIME EXPO since this morning...)

But, I know. The tale end audience has a different pleasure from the front seats.
(The singer, band, audience... Everything in the theater can be seen in a glance!)

Because of strict inspection(I don't know whether it was true or not), audience couldn't enter the theater smoothly. So, the start of the live also delayed.


Although people are still coming into the hall, Mr. Danny Choo appeared on the stage(*5).
It was the Second day of ANIME EXPO 2011. In the First day, there was the key note by Mr. Itoh, the president of Crypton Future Media Inc. Also, there was a conference by Mr.Sasaki(Crypton Future Media Inc.) and Onyx Kobayashi(*6) in this afternoon. In these two conference, audience has gotten a keyword...

To make sure, I would say that audience comes from Japan in this theater is 44 official tour member and some personal tourists includes me. The ratio would be only 1 to 2 percent of more than 5,000 audience. Almost all people gathered in the theater are American and Canadian. Of course there are Anglo-Saxon, Afro-American, Asian... Everyone call "Miku san maji tenshi!! (Miku san is truly an angel!)" in unison! It's definitely Mune-Atsu! (My heart becomes hot!)
This keyword has become the common knowledge of the both shore of the Pacific Ocean!

Next, "DANCEROID(*8)" started the opening performance. The two girls danced "Luka Luka Night Fever" and 2 to 3 songs.

After their subordinate play, we needed to wait more minutes before main performance. In these waiting time, TV advertisement of Toyota corolla(*9) could seen on the large display.

This theater is a full-scale theater. It also holds opera concert. However, balcony was not used for this live because of the problem of viewing angle. The right side of the first floor is not used, either. Although The capacity of this theater is 7,500, the promoter announced around 5,100 people enjoyed Miku's live in a few days later.

In that idling time, there are some people who started to shake glow stick(or chemical light). This is called "Cyalume" or "Lumica" in Japan. I also snapped green one.
I've brought 7 to 8 sticks from Japan. So, I gave all of them to my neighbors. A girl just behind me almost shouted "Wow!! Thank you so much!". A guy next to me suddenly started to count his bills from his pocket, and asked "I know what it is. But it's first time for me to shake it at the live. Anyway, How much is it?" I didn't receive even 1 cent. Because I was very glad to shake this green light with you!
Some other Japanese seemed to bring lots of glow sticks. Also, it was sold at the lobby. Finally, many audience had shook the luminous sticks.

It was almost 15 minutes later from the schedule...

At first, we could listen to "Project Diva desu."
The second song is "World is Mine"! Unbelievable volume of screaming covers Nokia theater!!
I must mention about the shouts of joy. High-pitched cries were outstanding among the hall. I think that there were many girls. In contrast, guys' cries just like the rumbling of the ground are main in Japan. And, everybody knows many songs well.
The theater has good acoustics. Of course, I know, it is meaningless to compare with a live house. Actually I found slight distortion in high-pitch in latter part of this live... but it didn't matter.

And, I need to talk about glow sticks. First of all, people were actually just shaking. The movement of sticks were not kept together. I suppose that people who has any direct experience to shake glow stick must be only Japanese who share's only 1 to 2 percent of this theater. Others may have some similar experience through movie such as YouTube.
However, the way of shaking in the hall became gradually equally. At last, I found that the American original shaking rhythm were established! It means 5,000 American have learned that how to shake glow stick to the music and dance! That's great!!


All audience in the back half of the first floor had stood up since the opening. The front seat was quiet at first, and gradually shaking rhythm become evenly. Finally they have stood up in the encore part!
I hadn't stood up through the live. Because a girl had been seated behind me. In reality, there were not many standing audience.

Personally I thought that the image of Miku was better than "39's giving" held in Tokyo, Mar. 2010. At that time, my impression of the image was "Wow! It's very stereoscopic...". Of course, I thought that it was great.
However, this image of Miku was just like a dancing plastic figure in an aquarium or a glass case. I could get a feel of material of plastic from the stereoscopic image. It was not a movie any more... that was substantial! Also, the motion of Miku has become more smoothly.

After the third song "Electric Angel", Miku made a greeting for us.

「はじめまして~ 初音ミクで~す」

... means "Happy to meet you, I'm Hatsune Miku!" As same as usual, her speaking voice was a little bit foolish (sorry!)... But, the speaking was well trained (or optimized).

The next group of songs are "Koi suru VOC@LOID", "Clover Club" and "PoPiPo".
Especially, the second lyrics of "Popipo" was English version! At first, audience actually had been confused in a second, but immediately the hall came alive.
And, the next song was "Romeo and Cinderella". Costume also changes one after another, of course instantly!

(After I came back to Japan, I remembered it. In "Romeo and Cinderella", Miku definitely had a microphone stand that was of course a part of image. However I had naturally understood that was a microphone stand... The latest stereoscopic movie successfully tricked me!)

And then, "Ura Omote Lovers", "Puzzle", "VOiCE" and "1/6" were medleyed. After "Ura Omote Lovers", Miku introduced each members of the band. In that section, Miku spoke English! I was not sure that American could get her English or not...
Also, "moon" and "Hatsune Miku no Shoushitsu (Disappearance of Hatsune Miku)" were played. When "Shoushitsu", Miku was in completely different costume from the "39's Giving" last year.

Then Miku really disappeared, and Kagamine Rin & Len appeared. Audience cried out again! In that shout, they sang "Migikata no Chou". And then Rin remained the stage and played "Roshin Yuukai (Meltdown)". Personally, I thought that playing the song was brave choice.

Next, Luka appeared on the stage, sang "Just be Friends". Of course, high pitch shout wrapped the theater again! During this song, audience shook their glow sticks to Luka's arm. That was amazing...
Then, Miku came back to the stage again. And She and Luka sang "World's End Dance Hall". Surprisingly, that was an English version! Needless to say, that's the first play! Unfortunately, I couldn't catch most of all lyrics... XD
Only Miku stayed on the stage and "from Y to Y" was played. Next song "Saihate" was sung by her in mourning suits. The next was "Finder". The last one was "SPiCa". Disappointedly, it well known as "SPiCa cannon(*11)" wasn't fired.
(Later, I heard the sequel about it from @nakanohito_1go on Twitter. Because of equipments and budget, the staff couldn't launch "SPiCa cannon".)

The band member left from the stage here. Although the calling of encore were not united, gradually "Miku! Miku!" call became majority.
A few minutes later, the band member came back to the stage. Miku also came back! "Ai Kotoba" and "StargazeR" were sung. Then she talk about anything in English, but I couldn't catch it.

The last song was "Hajimete no Oto". That was specially arranged for this live! This song pierced me to the heart. She attracted 5,000 audience, and

 「世界のどこでも わたしは歌う それぞれのハジメテノオトを♪」
"Whenever in the World, I sing the first sound each."

While it's her first footprint on the United States, it's also the declare of her decision to go and sing whenever in the World. I felt as if I were in a dream. That's definitely "Mune-Atsu", too!

Oh, The official summarized movie of the live was out!


Some TV crew was interviewing for the audience in front of the theater after the live.

There was Japanese TV crew, too.


I had a few mug of beer and tipped a friendly waiter handsomely at the bar near the hotel I stayed. When I put my body on my bed with pretty good mood, I remembered many things at once.
... It was 4 years ago. When I listened to her demo song "01_ballade" first and was astonished, when I watched the leek shaking movie many times everyday and insisted "I'm not addicted!", when I made a fuss with TBS program and Google image search...

"Miku is my wife." is very common expression. On the other hands, many fan who have followed her since her debut also think that "Miku is our daughter." We could have seen that our daughter has grew up and has been active all over the World... Grabbing the glow stick, I couldn't help my tear.
It was very nice... one of the best event of this year for me to join the live. At the opposite side of the Pacific Ocean, only 44 member of official tour, some personal tourists and me could capture this pleasure. I'm sure that I'm the luckiest fan!

MIKUNOPOLIS以外のANIME EXPO 2011



"MIKUNOPOLIS"は"ANIME EXPO 2011"の中のイベントのひとつでした。先に中枢部分だけをレポしてしまったので、内へ掘り下げずに外へ広げる不自然な作戦を採らざるを得ませんw
というわけで"ANIME EXPO 2011"について書いてみました。


このANIME EXPO 2011は7/1~4の間、米国ロサンゼルスにあるロサンゼルスコンベンションセンター(LCAA)で行われた、北米最大のアニメフェスティバルです。


わたしが現地に到着したのは1日の午後。もう夕方近くになっていました。

ただし、わたしは2日だけ通用の1日券($50)を買っていたのでロビーまでしか入れません。しかしロビーには…












そりゃもう全身に激痛が走るようなカローラ(公式!)。
その場で用紙をもらって簡単なアンケートに答えるとポスターをもらえます。

ちなみに翌日は別のデザイン、またライブ会場前でも別のデザインのポスターを配布していました。実は帰国する日はまた別のポスターを配っていたのですが、それはわたしはもらえずじまい。またライブ当日に会場前で配布していたミククッションも品切れで受け取れませんでした。それらは非常な心残り。


そんなわけでポスターは2日間で合計3枚ゲット。後ほどDIYに行って下水用のパイプを買ってきてポスターに折り目をつけず日本に持ち込むことに成功します。



この日のうちに受付に行って「明日の入場仮券を持ってるんだけど本券に交換できるか?」と問うてみたらあっさりOK。
このイベントは、まず自宅からネットで予約してクレジットカードで支払いを済ませると、バーコードと予約番号がメールで送信されてくるので、これをプリントアウト、あるいはスマートフォン画面に表示して受付に提示すると、首からぶら下げるタイプの正式入場券をくれる仕組みになっています。

この日は入場券を手にしただけでおとなしく引き下がり、大手を振って入場できる翌日を待ちます…

さて明けて7月2日。
9時開場と勘違いして8時半に現地に着いたら10時開場でした。歩道橋のような場所の下に列を作って待たされます。
このLACCは西館と南館に分かれていて、メインホールが南館、各パネルの会場が西館。その間をつなぐ渡り廊下(実はここにも小さな会議室がたくさんある)が道路をまたいでいる、その真下に並んでいると考えてください。

10時の5分ほど前に列が動き出し、そのまま場内へ。特に拍手などはありませんでした。
まっすぐに"MIKUNOPOLIS"ブースに向かい、公式パンフレットとコースターを購入します。やはり人気があるのか混雑しています。

そのあと同じ場所から伸びる応援ねんどろいどの購入列にも並んだのですが、販売開始まで1時間ほど待たされる時間がもったいないと感じたのと、これはわたしよりもむしろ現地の人に買ってもらいたいと考えて途中で抜けました。このねんどろいどはチャリティになっていて売り上げの一部が赤十字を通じて東日本大震災の義援金となるのでね。


場内をあちこち見て回ります。広いといえば広いけど、メインホールは東京ビッグサイトの西館ワンフロアよりも小さいと思う。かなり余裕を見た通路幅・ブース設置にもなっているし、座って休憩できる場所や軽食の売店もあります。

大半の部分が企業ブースになっており、日本でも見覚えのある会社も出展しています。

…しかし"YAOI"って。




奥のほうは"Artist Alley"という同人コーナー。それほど多くのサークルが出ているわけではないけれど、レベルは高いですよ! 日本でよくある二次創作の薄い本は見当たらず、ポスターやポストカード、缶バッジなどが主流でした。大きなものではタペストリーなどもありました。

これらを購入しましたが、ちょっと高かったですね。これで1枚$10ぐらいします。同人の相場はわたし詳しくは知りませんが、強気の価格設定だなあと思いました。日本は国民あげて出版物印刷物が大好きなのでタウンページなどを見ても印刷屋さんがたくさんありますが、米国ではそうもいかない…という事情もあるのでしょう。

著作権や二次創作に対する考え方が違うから薄い本が出ないのか、それともオリジナルも含めて自分でシナリオを構成するところまではいかずにファンアートで止まっているのか、その辺りの事情は判然としません。しかしあそこに出展してきていた人たちの絵のレベルは非常に高い一方で、ひとつひとつのイラストの価格なども考え合わせると、同人の層そのものは厚くないと考えたほうがいいのかもしれませんね。

いっぽう、外食の価格などを考えるとむしろ日本の物価が安すぎるという考え方もできると思いました。たとえば今回の旅行中、ある日の夕食として街中にあるカジュアルなレストランに入ってビールを1杯とサラダにパスタを注文し、これに税金とチップを上乗せしたら$30になってしまいました。大きなホタテや海老がゴロゴロ入った美味しいシーフードパスタでしたが、$30には少々慌てました。ちゃんとコースでスープとかデザートまで頼んだら$50行ったでしょう。
これを基準にするなら町の印刷屋さんも日本の倍近い価格で印刷を引き受けた結果としてポスターが倍額で頒布されても不思議はない…かもしれません。さて真相は?


そしてコスプレの多いこと。それもなかなかに本格的です。










わたしが"Would you mind taking your picture?"と問うと、一瞬「えっ私!?」みたいなはにかんだ笑顔を一瞬見せながらも"Not at all!"と返事をするやいなやパッとポーズをキメてくれるのです。
(どの方もその戸惑ったような笑顔がとても可愛らしいのですが、それは撮影した人たちだけが知っている真実の笑顔なのですよ…)


コスプレ衣装そのものは米国でもウェブなどを通じて購入できるはずですし、日本から個人輸入している可能性もありますが、サイズを考えると日本人向けの衣装がそのまま着用できるとは限らないので、自作も多いことでしょう。
ショービジネスの本場・ハリウッドを抱えるロサンゼルスですから何事も本物志向。細部や小物にも手を抜きません。(ホントかよ…w)



地毛でリンコスできるってのは強みかもしれません。
(世界中どこ探しても地色でミクは無理だろうからなw)








「マトリョシカ」「magnet」など作品別コスも見かけられました。







もちろんVOCALOID以外のコスプレもたくさんいましたよ。






















そしてコスプレしたまま帰ってゆくのです。あるいは飲みに行ってしまったり。これは夕方、会場の隣の駅のそばで撮影したもの。







このあとわたしは食事のために一度会場を離れ、午後は西館で行われたカンファレンスに出席します。
壇上にはクリプトンの佐々木さんと、プロデューサ代表の小林オニキスさん。

発売元のクリプトンとしては、北米でのマーケティングを兼ねてのカンファレンスということでした。実は英語版ミクの開発が進んでいるのです。ただし「中の人」こと藤田咲さんがあまり英語を得意としておられないとのこと、ルカとは違ってカタカナ英語になるやもしれません。

席上、佐々木さんが「英語ミクの試作品がですね…今夜この近所で大音響で聴けるかもしれませんね…」などと言い出しました。会場大喝采。もちろんこれが何を意味するかって言ったら当然これですよ。


佐々木さんはいくつもの質問を会場に投げかけます。日本でそうなっているように米国でもプロデューサを指名して聴くような動きはあるのかどうか、あるいはどこでVOCALOID楽曲を探して聴くのか…
それによって英語ミクが成功するかどうか、言ってみれば現状では消費一辺倒に近い米国からプロデューサが誕生するのかどうかというところが、やはり発売元にとっての一大関心事であるわけで。

小林オニキスさんも「米国人の感性で作られたVOCALOID曲が聴きたい!」と。わたしもそう思います。海の向こうからもいい曲が届くようになれば、日本のプロデューサとの切磋琢磨も生じることでしょうし、米国人が作った歌に日本人がイラストをつけて…なんて展開も出てくるかも。インターネットによって国際的な交流が簡単にできる世の中なんですよ今は。

わたし自身、これからミクが米国でも売れる=米国人ボカロPが次々誕生するかどうかは、VOCALOIDの将来を考える上でとても重要な分岐点であろうと考えています。


しかしながら。
実際には英語版のVOCALOIDはいくつも発売されていますが、それらがあまり外国で活躍しているという話は聞いたことがないのです。とても残念なことだと思います。ルカなら今すぐ日本語と英語の両方で歌えるし、SweetAnnやBigAlなどのVOCALOID2エンジン搭載のソフトも多々出ているのに、それでもミクなのはどうしてなんだろう? やはりいまだ米国はキャラ重視のところにとどまっているのかもしれません。

今はまだキャラ重視でもいいのですが、「俺の歌をミクに歌ってもらいたい!」と思うあまりに消費者から生産者にクラスチェンジする米国人がどのぐらい出てくるのか、そこにとても期待しています。
